Devious Technology is extremely proud to present Collections!

Now you can collect all of your favourite art on deviantART in a snap.

8-) +collect
Your Collections reside on your Favourites page. Now, when you've :+fav:'d some deviations, you can click "Edit" on your favourites page, and start organizing them into collections, just like folders in your gallery!

8-) Instant Collecting
A brand new feature: We've added a Collections Bar to every page, which lets you drag and drop art to it, from anywhere on deviantART.

Whenever you see a deviation you love, you can use your mouse to drag and drop the deviation straight to your collections! Click the 'Collect' button at the top-right of deviantART to see your collections at any time, and even create new collections right there, without ever leaving the page.

8-) A new way to deviate
We believe a collection is an art piece in itself, so we've added features to let you Comment on collections, and even Collect them! If you're a collection owner, you can add descriptions and custom icons to the collections on your favourites page. And Subscribers and Senior Members have full CSS control over the whole collection.

Any deviants interested in how all this :+fav:ing and +collecting will affect the "Browse Popular" metric might be interested in reading mccann's FairExposure News.

Also, keep an eye on the Today page to watch the new collections rolling in!

A round of kudos to spyed, Morris88 (and me! ;)), mccann, lolly and a host of folks from Devious Technology for putting the Collect machine together. We're extremely proud, and we hope you enjoy using Collections.

And to all our visitors reading: There's never been a better time to Become a Deviant ;)

Keep it bluesy.

The collections feature itself I really don't care about one way or the other, but the ability to drag and drop normally is bugging me. I like to go through my watch list and drag pictures I like into another firefox tab for a closer look.

Having to click ctrl to do this simple task every time lowers my enjoyment just that much more that I question whether I'll re-sub next time it's up.

At least give an option to disable those features.

Oh, and I just logged out to see what people were talking about with the ads - yes, that's obnoxious...

The instant collect is a nice idea, but I'd personally like to know that somebody's at least looked at my work- rather than just dragged the thumbnail into their portable +fav bin.

If you drag and drop a deviation into your collections, is it automatically added to your favs?

To be frank the 'fair exposure' thing isn't going to work, and I don't really like the idea of addition of 'collections'.
It's been said before, it's quite unnecessary. Being able to organise your pictures is the only really good thing to come out of it.

I wasn't too keen on the fav system anyway, and now it's just been made worse. I feel frustrated when some random deviant decides to 'fav' one of my works and doesn't leave a comment, to a certain extent it's quite disrespectful.

There should be a system in place where if you want to fav something, you have to leave a comment.

Does anyone think that this is fair?

No. HAVE TO give a comment is not fair at all. I dislike it when I have to comment on an art piece just to fave it. (Doing that will get me to do forced comments and it won't come from the heart. Also, comments are done right from the spot in order to fave it so not much thought goes into it anyways.) I don't think only faving it is disrespectful at all. I enjoy the piece and faving it is a sign that your worked is loved and the more it is faved, the more chances that people can stumble upon your work because of a fave and the collections just make is easier than just to organize it.

Let's say this....

You spot a person that makes this wonderful picture about...the stars for instance and it is tied into astrology. He or she states that astrology has been a big influence in his or her artworks.

You, bored out of your mind, check out his or her favorites...spotting a gallery folder in the same subject. Bingo, you find a piece equally as wonderful. You check the image but sometimes you also check out the gallery of the second person and like what he or she does.

See how faves come into play? Faves aren't just for your enjoyment but also a way to discover someone else's work. And the gallery folders makes it easier cause you don't have to go through 50 pages of faves...

I sometimes lurk in the favorites as well as the galleries of the person's and I think it has been great to discover more talented artists....so really, faves also are a big part too...it is not like art is shoved into a folder and forgotten...I enjoy browsing though my own folders as well and check up on the pics again once in a while.

As for comments, it really depends on who comments too. Many people are like, cool and awesome...it is not like all of us are critiques or anything. To get really good comments back, search around. Like this one... [link] . That is a once in a lifetime comment I get cause normally I don't search for these people but this person was a *TalentHaven admin that checked out my work and decided to leave a comment like this and I am really grateful...but I don't ask my watchers and viewers to always do the same. Great if they do but I wouldn't force it upon them.

Like I said, look around. There are clubs like these that specializes in critiquing ones work and I think they are wonderful. I have considered to submit anything but I refuse to because a lot of my pieces are make for the fun of it and I am not looking to sharpen that very piece but rather to start from scratch and 'try again'. When I get serious, then I'll ask for critiques from clubs.

You didn't ask for it...very sorry for the spill... ^^;

I understand what you're saying, and to a certain extent I do agree with you. But sometimes I do feel that some artwork is put into a folder and forgotten; not alot of people will look through their favourites for various reasons-which is a shame.

The comment-to-fav idea came from me thinking that, if I really like an artwork and it would become of use to me, or it inspired me or for some other reason, there must be a reason for why you are faving it, and perhaps as the artist of that work you would like to hear of stuff like this rather than just getting a message saying 'so and so has fav'd your work'.

I've had it done to me after 2 seconds of submitting something, and felt that they had just seen the thumbnail and thought 'oh that's nice' and added it.

I can see the acknowledgement factor, and the fact that this would bring on alot of 'awesome faved', but at least it might encourage a little bit more helpful criticism and try and prompt a relationship between the artist and the person who fav'd the work.

But again, I can see its flaws and I understand what you're saying, but it doesn't make me like the current 'collections' system either way.

(And I appreciate the spill- I hope you don't a bit of a spill back ^^;)

I understand what your saying. However, I believe if someone took the time to collect it in a folder than just clicking the fave button...(it does take more time to do so) and especially if they are re-organizing from the mess like 50 pages before...(I just have to survive 12 pages or so.... =P)...I see that there is some care with their collections.

Honestly, if someone has the heart to comment, critique, and just spill all over the comments on how much they have loved the work, then they will. I have no doubt...I just think most of us on dA are the ones that wants the critique and that aren't many that always takes the time to give an awesome comment. I know that age doesn't equal maturity but look at the demographics.... 13-24. Most of us are here to get noticed and improve...and even though there is always the onset to help one another even with your own age group, I think to really get a comment that picks out flaws, improvements, strength, etc, you need an eye of someone who does it everyday....or does this for a major class or something.... Like seriously, it is like the graphic design industry. Just this huge boom of people coming it at the same ages and at the same time....

I've admit...and it is not something that I recommend doing anyways...^^;...I have directly collected things by the thumbs...(mostly with stamps)...but after that, I go back and read the comments, full view it, etc... To tell you the truth, actually, I end up spending more time with a page.

Personally, I think the best way to get a relationship isn't just a deviation comment but rather the whole she-bang! Comment on several works of a person, comment of their front page, any problems of such, you can send in a note...okay, ^^; no stalking...but eventually with a few people, it starts to get natural with other deviants.

I love the folders, you don't, well, we should leave it like that....

And yeah...I just spilled again...didn't I....

I like the idea of fair exposure, however I think it would be better to keep the old popular system and introduce a new search "random". This would mean there would be three different search categories: Newest, Popular, and Random. That way people who have worked hard to achieve popularity will not get their deviations kicked off the first page, but people who have yet to receive recognition will also get a fair chance as well.

I'm okay with the collection idea, but seriously . . . whatever happened to the day when you could browse through a fav gallery according to categories? I seriously used that function all the time, and it would be really useful in order to help make collections.

I can't be the only one who wants this feature back. It made browsing through favs so much more convenient to find something specific or to just view the devs you felt like seeing at the time.

I realize that I can go through my favs and make the collections of whatever, but it would be a lot easier if I could narrow it down according to categories first.

Sweet! Now I Finally Have The Explanation. Just One Question Though, When You Collect A Deviation, Does The Creator Get A Message Informing Them Of It?
Also, I Am Very Glad To Now Be Able To Arrange My Favorites Like I Did With My Gallery. I Wanted To Do That For A Long Time, And Now I Finally Can! Thank You All Very Much For Your Hard Work! It Is Highly Appreciated!

Hey, just a quick question, I made a folder and then delete it, but I forgot that some of the faves that were on that folder, I had removed them from my 'favourites' gallery, now they seem to have been removed from my favourites, what happened to them? Is there a way to get them back?
